The first step to designing a mural is deciding what to have painted on the wall. I encourage each prospective client to think about putting their personality into the design. You tell me about your passions and the things in life that move you and I will design a concept based on that. This process is a lot easier for me than it sounds as transforming these intangible things into a work of art is what I do best. A short consultation is necessary to get to know my client’s personality in order to bring the design to life. This process usually takes about 30 minutes and can be done in person, by phone, or by email. During this consultation I would also need to know the measurements of the area that will be painted and the condition of the walls. A scanned picture sent to me by email of the room/wall is very helpful if that is possible.
The next step is to sign a pricing agreement. Most clients provide a price range that they are looking to spend and I can customize a design around that final price. Any vision that I have can be tailored to price. A price quote will be sent to the client (emailed, if available). The client would sign the pricing agreement, send a third of the final cost for a deposit and we would schedule sketch reviews and final mural execution. The deposit is nonrefundable but all of my work is satisfaction guaranteed. Pricing can always be revamped to include more or less detailing (in other words changing the degree of difficulty) to reflect in a changed price quote.
Next is sketch reviews. I like to give a few different sketches for the client to choose from unless my client is very specific as to what they want, and then one sketch is usually enough. Once the design has been chosen then the mural execution can begin.
All original sketches as well as design ownership remain the property of Funkshonal Art. On the scheduled day for painting to begin I will return any research that my client has provided to me (i.e. photos, color samples, etc.).
Please contact me for a specific quote but using the prices below you can figure out a rough price for what your mural will cost.
Description | Degree of Difficulty | Features | Pricing per sq ft |

Children's room | high | Original custom design for a cartoon look. | $50. |
Children's room | high | Very detailed landscape including animals | $40. |
Landscape | low | Not much detail | $20. |
General mural | medium | Average amount of detail. | $30. |
General mural | high | Requiring a lot of research or painting people or animals or any other kind of extensive detailing. | $50. |
Mural painting is physically taxing so an average painting day will usually not exceed five (5) hours.
One third deposit is required prior to beginning the process unless otherwise agreed upon. The remainder is due at completion. Full payment prior to beginning the job is always acceptable as well. New Jersey sales tax of 7% will be added (and listed on the quotation) to the final price for all murals done in New Jersey (PA does not require tax on murals). All of my work is satisfaction guaranteed.
If a job is "killed" at any time before the mural is started but after the sketches have been finished the full deposit will not be refunded. The sketch, quote and consultation process is just as time consuming as the mural painting and this will compensate me for my time.
Considering distance of designated wall & my schedule, the mural can usually be started within two weeks after a signed pricing agreement is received.
The area where the mural will be done will need to be prepared by the client. Preparation would include clearing out any furniture and/or clutter on floor in front of wall and removing any pictures or objects currently hanging on the wall to be painted. If nails are removed the holes will need to be spackled by the client prior to starting the job. This can be done by me at an additional charge. An estimate can be done and will vary depending on size and number of holes or imperfections in the wall. Please remember that I am in the art business, not the remodeling business so this will be a higher charge than a handy man.
I can recommend reputable painters in the area that will give you a price quote on painting and/or repairing surfaces prior to painting. I have a relationship with several highly recommended companies that I would be happy to suggest. Please contact me and include this information when returning the pricing agreement.
We will schedule the job with an extra day available at the end in case problems arise and additional time is needed. Whether this extra day is used or not does not effect the price quote.
It is preferred that no one is in the house (or establishment) while the mural is being painted, if at all possible. The reason for this is that onlookers tend to be very interested in how I do what I do and ask many questions. Although this is very flattering, it is extremely distracting (I cannot paint and have a conversation at the same time). Also, the client may see the mural design half done but is not able to see how I am going to make it look like what we’ve agreed upon and some of my clients have been known to get concerned mid-way through. I have never had a client be anything less than thrilled when their mural is complete but this doesn’t take away the fear if the mural is seen in its infancy stage. If the mural is being done in a restaurant or office (that cannot shut down for this job) I will work when the business is closed but will need access. This may require me to work in the middle of the night. There will be an additional charge only if the mural cannot be completed in one night (average five hours). This will be included in the price quotation.
All murals will be photographed for our business portfolio. This means that they may be included on any printed promotional material and on the company website. No personal information about location (i.e. house numbers or street names) will be legible in the photograph. They will be blurred out. Business names may be shown and listed on the site as references. By signing the price quotation you agree to have the finished mural photographed and added to our portfolio.
All clients are given a set of business cards. If the mural is done in a high traffic area this will just save time when people ask who painted the mural. Businesses will receive business cards for up to 2 years along with a nice display for the cards. I have a close relationship with all of my clients so additional business cards are only a phone call or email away. And once you are a client, you are a client for life!
